Ford Focus MK1 1.8 TDDi: poor car performance and high smoke levels
Good morning, everyone.
Today I would like to give you a 'tip', in case you happen to have a Ford Focus Mk1, with motorisation 1.8 Tddi (engine not equipped with a flute rail), which has high smoke and poor efficiency.
The special feature of this car, apart from the fact that it has a mixed distribution (chain from crankshaft to injection pump and belt from injection pump to camshaft), is to have a camshaft pulley that is not 'keyed'. Over time this tends to rotate, almost imperceptibly, around the axis of the camshaft, thus changing the valve opening and closing times.
To verify the position of the camshaft pulley the appropriate phase pins must be correctly positioned; by doing so, the motor will present a correct phasing e appropriate checks can be carried out.
This phenomenon can therefore adversely affect engine performance, causing a drop in performance and high black smoke from the exhaust.
N.B.: High smoke and poor efficiency may also indicate other types of failure, e.g. a possible clogging of the egr valve or a suction sleeve damaged, it is therefore necessary to check the integrity of these components before working on the camshaft pulley.
Good work and...... see you next time!
