9-speed automatic transmission 948 TE - FCA (part two)
The 948 TE 9-speed gearbox is available in three different transmission configurations:
- front-wheel drive (FWD)
The front-wheel drive configuration is similar to other transversely positioned gearboxes. Axle shafts are used to connect the final drive ratio to the front wheels
- four-wheel drive (4WD)
The four-wheel drive configuration uses a dual-range torque divider (PTU) and a dual-range rear-wheel drive module (RDM). The dual-range offers four-wheel drive high and four-wheel drive low. Both the PTU and RDM must be in the same condition to avoid binding conditions. Some applications use an RDM with the differential lock.
- all-wheel drive (AWD)
The all-wheel drive configuration employs the single-range torque divider (PTU) to provide a power flow equally divided between the front and rear. The system also utilises a single-range rear differential in a component called the rear drive module (RDM).
Note: often with 4WD and AWD are generically referred to as four-wheel drive systems, in reality the two systems are mutually very different.
In fact the 4WD distributes the power and consequently thein pairs, evenly over the wheels. This is Jeep's traditional 4×4 (Four by Four ) system, which is typically off-road. the limitation is that the four wheels turn at the same speed in all conditions (including cornering).
The AWD: All-Wheel Drive, on the other hand, is an innovation from the 1980s created to reconcile the need for off-road with comfort on the road, where power and torque are distributed 'differently' to individual wheels depending on conditions.
Lubricating liquid
As with any automatic transmission, the oil has a fundamental function: it must ensure lubrication, cooling and actuation of all components. It is therefore clear how important it is to have an oil that maintains its characteristics over time, at different temperatures and under great strain.
The 948TE uses the now classic automatic transmission lubricant ATF, that does not need to be replaced.
This is the same lubricant used for the gearbox 8HP45 ZFgearbox from which the FCA version is derived.
Maintenance
Checking the transmission fluid
The transmission fluid can be checked through the cap located in the box area,
where the differential is located. This procedure requires the use of a special tool.
Note
Always refer to the service manual for the correct procedures and checks.
We'll stop here for the moment... see you next Monday for 'Part Three' of this column, for more technical insights into the peculiarities of the gearbox... 948TE.
We would like to take this opportunity to remind you that our technical help desk will be available throughout the month of August 2017 except for the week of August 14-18. Both by phone (800.91.61.11) and online (from this Blog and in the Checkstar callcenter reserved area).
Good work..see you next time
