Porsche: Incorrect measurement of engine oil level after topping up (September 2013)
good morning
With this blog we report a defect that happened to many cars of the German brand produced between 2009-2011: Porsche Boxster, Boxster S, Cayman, Cayman S, 911 Carrera, 911 Carrera S and 911 Turbo.
Due to an incorrect oil level measurement by the on-board electronics, many workshops replaced the oil level sensor. The parent company carried out checks on the replaced sensors and ascertained that these had no particular faults and that the replacement was therefore not justified.
The problem lies in the fact that after filling the engine with oil, the oil level must be measured with the on-board computer. If you do not give the on-board computer time to perform the check, the check to confirm that the oil has been filled will not be carried out and the warning message 'Checking oil level' will still be displayed.
In addition, the warning message 'Check oil level' also comes on when the oil level has not been checked after a long period of time (which varies depending on the vehicle and its use: the instrument cluster calculates oil degradation based on certain parameters, such as driving style, average distance driven, number of cold starts, etc.).
Therefore, if this fault occurs after the customer has checked/rebutted the oil level, it is necessary to ask whether the customer has carried out the procedure as explained in the vehicle's owner's manual. The correct procedure is given below.
Carrying out a confirmation check after ENGINE OIL REPLACEMENT:
Add up to half a litre of engine oil at a time. Do not add more engine oil than required to reach the max. mark.
Check the oil level again with the on-board computer. Switch off the engine. Push the control lever forward to activate the selected field. Select "OIL" with the control lever. Push the operating lever forwards. The measurement starts. Allow the waiting time to elapse. Once the measurement has been completed, the engine oil level can be read on the segment display. If the segments are filled to the top line, the oil level has reached the maximum point.
Repeat the procedure and add more engine oil if necessary
hoping the info was helpful
I wish you good work
